4-Round Swiss – One Section: Open

Chess960 rules apply. (Chess960 rules follows the same as regular chess except for castling; See: https://chess960.net/how-to-play)

United States Chess Federation does not have a Chess960 rating. Therefore, this event is not rated and an active US Chess membership is not required. This tournament will use USCF Quick rating for pairings and prizes.

Prizes: Cash awards will be shared equally in case of tied placements. Prizes are based off entry fees. Title of Utah Chess960 Champion will be awarded to highest-place Utah resident.

Open: 1st – 25% of section entry fees, 2nd – 20%, Bottom-half 1st – 20%, Bottom-half 2nd – 15%

The Tournament Director reserves the right to create a second section (with its own prizes) if there are enough entries. If there are two sections, the “bottom half” prizes will be moved to the lower section and adjusted as determined by the Tournament Director.  

Entry Fee: $20 if registered and paid by Friday, February 9 (at www.utahchess.com), $30 onsite.

Format and Time Control: 4 rounds, Swiss-system pairings (no eliminations).

Open Section, all rounds: G/15 +5.
Players are responsible for supplying equipment (pieces, board and clock) and for knowing how to set clocks. (USCF Rule 16B)

Schedule: First round at 2 pm, others to follow immediately after.

Byes: Half-point byes – One half-point bye may be taken but must be requested prior to pairing of Rd 2. All bye requests are irrevocable after that time. Additional byes (i.e., more than one per player) will be zero- point byes.

Advance Registration: Option 1: Register online via link at utahchess.com.

Onsite Registration: Onsite registration will be from 1:30 pm to 1:45 pm. Players arriving after the onsite registration time closes, who have not registered and paid in advance will be given a half-point bye for round one and paired for round two (when that round is paired for all players in the section) or paired for round one at TD’s discretion.

If a player has a claim to two (or more) prizes, cash prizes shall be awarded in accordance with USCF Rule 32B.
